Harvey Entertainment

The Harvey Entertainment Company is one of the most time-tested names in family entertainment, having developed scores of characters to classic status over nearly six decades.

Harvey Comics was founded in 1939 in New York City as a comic book company by brothers Alfred, Leon and Robert Harvey. In the early 1950s, Harvey acquired the right to publish comic books based on the popular Paramount Pictures cartoon characters, including Casper the Friendly Ghost. In 1959, Harvey acquired from Paramount Pictures the proprietary rights to these cartoon characters and to the cartoon film library. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Harvey was one of the leading comic book publishers, publishing comic books based on its own family of characters that now included Richie Rich, Wendy the Good Little Witch, Hot Stuff, Little Dot, Little Lotta, Little Audrey, Herman and Katnip, and of course, Casper.

In 1989, Harvey Comics became The Harvey Entertainment Company, and some of its classic characters began to re-emerge in new feature films and television shows. In 1995, Casper, the theatrical motion picture, was produced by Harvey and Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment and distributed worldwide by Universal Pictures. The film was an instant box office success, grossing more than $300 million worldwide. The success of the film prompted two direct-to-video sequels, including Casper, A Spirited Beginning and Casper Meets Wendy, collectively selling more than 8 million video units.

Richie Rich also made his theatrical debut with the Warner Bros.' release of the feature film in 1995, generating $80 million in worldwide box office receipts and an estimated $125 million in worldwide retail home video sales. The sequel, Richie Rich's Christmas Wish was produced by Harvey and Saban Entertainment and released by Warner Home Video in 1998.

Harvey characters were prolific in television as well. In 1996, the 52 episode animated television series, Casper, premiered on the Fox Kid's Network and was rated the top children's series. The Baby Huey Show, which debuted in 1994 was rated the #1 weekend syndicated children's program in the U.S., and the Richie Rich Show was the #2 rated weekend syndicated children's program in the U.S. for the 1996/97 season.

Casper's Haunted Christmas is just the beginning of exciting new film and television projects from Harvey. Wendy the Witch, an all-new animated series, Richie Rich a live-action series, and Herman and Katnip, a retro-style animated series are some of the television shows to keep an eye out for in the future!
